Fragment of Sky No.2: A Nature-Inspired Artwork

Fragment of Sky No.2 is an original gold leaf and watercolour artwork by Cobie Ann Moore inspired by nature.

This new original artwork combines watercolour, modelling paste, ink, and 24k gold leaf to create a piece that is both soft and powerful. It is a tribute to the natural world and a reminder to pause and appreciate the beauty in the world around us.

As a contemporary artist working with mixed media, I’m always exploring ways to connect with my surroundings and reflect them through my work. Fragment of Sky No.2 began with a watercolour wash of blue and violet tones, creating a gentle, dreamlike sky. From there, I sketched a growing branch across the page, building it up with modelling paste to create texture and to echo the strength and beauty found in trees.

Nature is a huge inspiration for me, there is something about its perfectly imperfect forms, the way it stretches and adapts, that I try to honour in my work. The branches in my Fragment of Sky series are not fragile twigs, they are strong, powerful, full of life. Adding 24k gold is my way of honouring the strength and sacredness found in the natural world. Nature holds a kind of wisdom that often goes unnoticed. By giving the branch a golden glow, I’m saying: you are powerful, you are worthy, you are seen.

I then added contrast with a black fine liner, by outlining the branch I draw attention to its shape and the contrast makes the gold to shine even more brightly. It’s a simple detail, but one that gives the whole piece a sense of clarity and presence. And for the final touch, I signed the artwork with gold leaf, something I now do on all of my work. It’s a small but meaningful gesture, connecting me to each piece and honouring the time it took to bring it to life.
